Ceiling Panel Embellished with Lotus Flowers

Description

This rare 19th Century wooden ceiling panel came from an old Indian haveli mansion in Gujarat. The design is a coffered grid with strong rectangular lines softened and enlivened with lotus flowers. All the wooden parts interlock with mortise-and-tenon joinery and a few nails. The thin pieces of wood that hold the flowers slide freely inside a channel cut into the side of the structural beams. The beams themselves are surprisingly thick and strong -strong enough to suspend a bed or swinging bench from hand-forged iron loops that are still present in multiple locations. The Indian ceiling panel features warm red pigments on the framing, deep blue in the coffers, and bright white on the lotus flowers –all original. This is one of four sections that survive from the same structure and all are of similar impressive dimensions. Each panel makes striking wall art, a unique headboard, or even part of a modern tray ceiling. 2 Panels available. Price for Each.
